This weekend I came down with shingles* and foolishly convinced myself I was not too sick to go dumpstering. Basically I wound up shaking and struggling to continue working, unable to resist the potential for more cookies, and we only stopped at one place, but that worked out fine. Despite feeling exhausted and being unable to help much with cleaning and sorting the food, we found some excellent things, including a box of chocolate meringues and four or five full trash bags filled with hundreds of bundles of asparagus, and a full bag of cabbages. I looked up whether these items had been recalled or something, and they had not. The cabbage must have been leftover from St. Patrick’s Day (there was a full bag of potted shamrocks as well) but the asparagus remains a mystery.

We were of course unable to take all of this and just picked out a few. There were a few boxes of black and white cookies, chocolate filled cookies, another babka, bacon, eggs, and coffee, and a number of things I like a lot that I get automatic dibs on because my trash buddy is allergic, and a number of things that we both like that he gets automatic dibs on because I got them last time. Since I’m sick, I took mostly microwavable meals in case I didn’t have the energy to cook and let him have the rest. Here’s what I got:

  • A meatloaf
  • Frozen spinach and cheese farfalle
  • Frozen naan
  • Sriracha shrimp bowl
  • Frozen baked ziti
  • Pollo asado and pesto marinated frozen chicken breasts
  • Frozen vegetable stir fry mix
  • Shrimp gyoza
  • Plain Greek yogurt
  • 5 Blueberry and vanilla yogurt cups
  • A miniature wheel of brie
  • Frozen açaí pulp
  • 2 heads of green cabbage
  • 3 bundles of asparagus
  • 6 vine tomatoes
  • 5 apples
  • 9 oranges
  • 4 pears
  • Candied orange slices
  • 2 kinds of dried pineapple
  • Dried apricots
  • Raisins
  • Fig bars
  • Pecan praline granola
  • Pistachios
  • Walnuts
  • 2 kinds of rice crackers
  • Tortilla chips
  • Chocolate chocolate chip meringues
  • Little chocolate and vanilla ice cream cones
  • Neapolitan sandwich cookies
  • Pepper
  • Cinnamon
  • Chile lime seasoning
  • A bouquet of magenta roses

So as usual, the trash god rewards the foolish pursuit of gluttony.

*which I got, oddly, after reading several forum discussions about chicken pox exposure and vaccination, and because of this was able to accurately diagnose myself before getting confirmation from a legit doctor, and which is treatable with medication I already had at home.
